چکیده

Majority voting and social evaluation functions are the main alternatives proposed in the literature for aggregatingindividual preferences. Despite these being very different, this papershows that the ranking of income distributions, symmetric under the same transformation, by S-Gini consistent social evaluation functions and majority voting coincide if and only if the inequality index under consideration is the Gini coefficient. In this case, we show that the equally distributed equivalent income is equal to the median of the distribution. In addition, we find that the Gini coefficient is just an affine function of the median–mean ratio. JEL: Classification: D31, D63, P16.

Stanford Center for International Development Working Paper No. 447 Decomposition of Gini Coefficient Based on Axioms and a New Between-Subgroup Inequality Measure

Since Soltow (1960) first addressed the question of the Gini coefficient decomposition by population subgroups (hereinafter referred to as decomposition), there are more than a dozen different decompositions available in the literature. Whether the Gini coefficient is decomposable and, furthermore, whether the decomposition practices are arbitrary are debated in the literature, since there is n...

Peer Pressure in Smoking and its Impact on Social Welfare; A Study Using Agent-based Modeling and Simulation

Many people die each year due to smoking. Social pressures, such as peer pressure, which are manifested in one's interactions with his/her peers, are from very effective factors in people's tendency to smoke. In this research, it was attempted to study and analyze peer pressure in smoking and its impact on some of the welfare indicators including mortality number due to starvation, wealth avera...

A Social Choice Lemma on Voting Over Lotteries with Applications to a Class of Dynamic Games

We prove a lemma characterizing majority preferences over lotteries on a subset of Euclidean space. Assuming voters have quadratic von NeumannMorgenstern utility representations, and assuming existence of a majority undominated (or “core”) point, the core voter is decisive: one lottery is majority-preferred to another if and only if this is the preference of the core voter. Several applications...
